Graduate Thesis 2014-2015

Preliminary Design
Final Design

My graduate thesis was an exploration into shared social space, taking what was pre-existing, and molding it past the social norms of everyday public parks. The site is City Hall Plaza in downtown Boston, Massachusetts. The current layout is dead and unappealing. I took this as an opportunity to reinvent the space and bring in new users. The design and form was primarily based upon my interest in skateboarding and extreme sport culture. The park is open to all users, with carefully designed areas to attract certain activities ranging from working individuals on lunch to the young skateboarding crowds and everyone in-between. The undulating, organic forms flowing throughout the park act as a playful dichotomy against the hard, rectilinear outlines of the over bearing perimeter buildings.
